University of Kent: MSc in Infectious Diseases Reasons for study (minimum of 100 words, maximum of 2000 characters) * Everyone has that “ah-ah” moment that sparks up an interest. Watching the movie - Rampage was my “ah-ah” moment. I was fascinated by the high level of technology mashed up with molecular science to create a deadly pathogen. That day, I read about Clustered Regularly Interspersed Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) and figured there was more to CRISPR and the movie did not accurately do justice to the gene editing tool that can be used to target and destroy invading foreign DNA cells, and actually manage infectious disease pathogens. I wanted to know more and that day marked the beginning of my quest to know more about infectious diseases, especially how they affect a large number of the human population. Having been introduced to some pathogens of infectious diseases during my undergraduate study in Parasitology and Microbiology classes, that set a tone for my

Royal Veterinary College - MSc in One Health: ecosystems, humans and animals (1000 words) …explaining why you would like to do the course and outlining your relevant skills and experiences - Why do you want to study the course and how will it benefit you? What qualities, including soft skills, can you bring to the course or how does the course suit your current skill set?  Why the RVC? What aspirations do you have for the future? How will your studies contribute to the College, your professional field and/or wider society? Everyone has that “ah-ah” moment that allows you to see a situation from a better perspective and takes away the fog that once clouded one’s vision. My first Veterinary Public Health class in my fifth year of university was my big “ah-ah” moment. I could not expressly decide if I had found my passion, but I knew I had found something that resonated with me. Using a social science approach to study traditional science was what tickled my fancy

Gender Parity: Let's get real a bit

Image
"No o, oko mi, sit down, your sister will clear the table" or "No o, Jide, you shouldn't be doing that, it's a girl's duty" or "Jumoke! Why is your brother doing the dishes?" or "Amaka, is that how you'll be cooking in your husband's house?" or "Ah ah! Funke, you knew Akin won't sweep this place well, why didn't you sweep it?" or "Let all the women join us in the kitchen, while the men talk business." You know who's talking in all these instances? The mothers ! And that's where it starts from. Personally, I don't see how we can close the gender gap faster before 135 years from now - as predicted by the World Economic Forum - if we don't handle gender parity from the root - the home ! The examples I mentioned above lead to what is called "Conditioning." That's the problem! We have attached roles to genders conditioning the thoughts of both sexes that this and t

Do you understand your "now" game?

"Those shoes are certainly beautiful and match with the bag. But they must have cost a fortune." I say this kind of thing to myself probably every Sunday. By the way, I attend a very elite church, one that you'll have no need for a catalogue to get fashion ideas once you step into. That aside, back to my thought. Maybe because I envision a lot and I'm constantly always engaging my mind in several conversations, I have such thoughts about fashion and being girly, which I'm struggling to be so good at. But every time I look at the shoes and the bags and the jumpsuits and the human hair and the flawless makeup, I always ask myself again "Do you know the source?" "Can you afford it now ?"         Alright, let's get started with the essence of writing this blogpost that has been on my mind for weeks now. First, I am not lazy. Second, I am hardworking. I know they mean basically the same thing, but yea, let's pretend they a

We Should All Be Feminists 2

#WeShouldAllBeFeminists  This is a sequel to the first post on  #WeShouldAllBeFeminists . I was criticized after I wrote the post, it went online first on Facebook, and then I brought it here. I had to overcome procrastination to write a sequel. First things first, do not forget that a Feminist is defined as s omeone who believes in feminism - the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. If you believe that a girl child should be in school because she has the same rights as a boy; you believe a lady should be duly promoted when she deserves it and not relegated just because of her gender, sweetheart, let us call a spade a spade, you are a FEMINIST. However, lots of women are overdoing FEMINISM. The same set of women who are advocating for feminism as extremists, are also the very same set that believe women should be treated with preference. Sounds familiar? Of course. Many women want to be preferentially treated, yet they claim the

PROFESSIONAL AND STUDENT DRESSING: WHICH SUITS YOU MORE?

Everyone wants to dress and feel youthful. So if you are a youth, this is such a natural feeling. Most guys want to appear in public and get everyone staring at them and complementing their outfit. But it is a few percentage of these guys that actually get the “What a nice converse you’ve got there!”or “Wow! See those Toms” or “Man, your Hilfigher is classic” or “Step it up dude, your blazers are killing!” Some people have actually resigned to fate sticking only to some “work cloths.” For crying out loud! You don’t want to look like someone who just stepped out of a 1914 magazine. Add some spice to your dressing. Unfortunately, there are girls who make me want to say: “God, do I really have to be identified as belonging to the same specie with this girl!” It is that bad. No one is saying you should not wear decent cloths. I have no “indecent” cloths either. Girl, talk to your wardrobe. This is not about money; it is about your taste. The little you have, save to buy something chi
